Plant your dahlia tubers after your last frost date, once the soil has warmed and there is no risk of freezing.
Choose a location with full sun and well-draining soil.Dig a hole 4 to 6 inches deep. Place the tuber horizontally if possible, with the eye or visible sprout facing upward. Cover with soil.
Space tubers 12 to 24 inches apart depending on the variety.
Do not water immediately after planting. Wait until shoots emerge from the soil to prevent rotting. Once growth appears, dahlias thrive with consistent watering, full sun, and support for taller varieties.

Dahlias do not tolerate frost.
In colder climates such as Michigan, tubers should be dug in the fall after the first frost but before the ground freezes. For us, this is typically late October into November depending on the season.
-
After digging, gently clean off excess soil and allow tubers to dry for about one week.
Store them in a breathable container packed with a medium such as pine shavings, peat moss, or vermiculite.
Keep them in a cool, dry location between 40 and 55 degrees for the winter.

Your first season growing dahlias is equal parts excitement and learning.
Dahlias are not difficult to grow, but they do benefit from attentive care. Even in year one, you should enjoy beautiful blooms. As you gain experience with watering, staking, and timing, your results often improve each season.
Once you grow dahlias, it is very common to want more.
